Warning! Learned Foot Attempts to Lead You Astray!
But I've got your back...

Learned Foot of KAR fame is a poser. He does a good job of steering people away from the evils of the gas grill, only to lead them astray by telling them to, "Now go forth and buy some lighter fluid."

Wrong! WRONG! WRONG!

Never use lighter fluid.

Bad Chemicals. Bad Taste. Pretty amature. What you need is one of these:

A little news paper or paper bag in the bottom, light a match, and let the coals get nice and toasty. None of the lighter fluid taste.

By the way, when you use newpaper, don't use the opinion section of the Star Tribune: The isn't enough substance to get a fire going and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

You knob.

A) Some people like the smell (and taste) of a lighter fluid soaked charcoal. It smells like victory summer.

B) If I said "Go forth and buy a chimney starter..." nobody would have known what the hell I was talking about.

(I bet you were condesendingly assuming I didn't know what a chimney starter was, weren't you? How Nick Coleman.)

BTW - It's spelled "amateur".

Amateur.

Nobody likes the taste of lighter fluid. Nobody. You just can't argue with a mad man running around with a can of toxic, flammable liquid and a match. It's remeniscent of Kerry burning down villages in 'Nam.

People would have known what a chimney starter was if you took the time to explain. You just might have had to type a little slower for some.

I've actually been having really good luck using clothes dryer lint soaked in paraffin to get my grill started--generally skipping charcoal for the most part and going with maple twigs from my yard and red oak scraps from my workshop. Where does that place me on the BBQ continuum?

Real wood is good. I use red oak in my commercial smoker. Dryer lint and paraffin wax? As long as it's not belly button lint and ear wax, I think your doing alright.
