A "Stroke Waiting to Happen"
Last night while I was tooling around the local Target store, I stuck my arm into one of those automatic blood pressure testing machines and HOLY CATS CALL THE AMBULANCE!

Well, not quite, but the result scared me. Scared me enough that I went to the clinic this morning were the Doctor informed me I was a "stroke waiting to happen".

So I had an EKG and a bunch of other tests with more on the horizon.

And, of course, medication.

It's a good thing that in the last few months I've started getting a handle on my health: Consistently working out, eating better, the usual stuff. I was planning on getting a physical sometime 'soon', but this really forced my hand.

Now I'm at home because they don't want me driving until I see what the meds do to me.

Yea!

Of course it's better than the alternative.

Good luck with this, Surly. I had a minor victory today in my weight loss program when I got below 220--that's been my big sticking point. Like you, I've got reason to believe that if I stay overweight, I'll have major problems--my granddad died of a heart attack at age 59, and my dad was on blood pressure drugs at my age (37).

Take heart--I believe I'm not on 'em now partly because of the exercise I did (cross country and track) as a kid. You can do the same, I'm sure.

I'm just glad that I found out now instead of ending up in a hospital bed with a burst blood vessel or artery. Plus, it's a sign that I need to look at how much stress I have in my life.

Dear Surly Dave,
Hopefully by now you've realized that your body is telling you it's dehydrated and NEEDS WATER!!! I realized you might not be much of a reader - but "You're not sick, you're thirsty" is an investment in health and wellbeing. Please drink WATER and take good care. If you resort to the broom closet and the kool-aid drinkers, please chase it with LOTS OF WATER!!!
