Surly's Soap Box

Studio 60 Review
I watched the new NBC 'comedy' Studio 60 last night.

Essentially, it's a 'behind the scenes' look at a failing late night, hard driving comedy show, a la 'Saturday Night Live', done in the style of 'The LeftWest Wing.

Why is the show failing? Well, as quest star Judd Hirsh makes it clear in a 53 second rant that the reason the show is failing is because the network and writers are afraid of ***drum roll*** The Conservatives and the Born-Again Christians! Or as Judd Hirsh referred to it, a 'psyclo religious cult'. They get into bashing born-agains towards the end of the show. Oh, and when I say bash, they make it very clear that one of the major points of the show is the tension caused by a born again cast member.

Yes, she is going to be a flake.
Yes, she is going to be a hypocrite and make all Christians look bad.

They also got some shots of at Bush, and promised that next week, they'll be going after him big time.

It's to bad, ya know. I was enjoying the show. The character interaction, the life situation, they way they where playing off each other was good. There were some excellent jokes, but they practically had to come to a stop so they could rage against Christians.

I'll probably watch one more episode and then let it go. It's not that I'm thin skinned about my faith or politics: I appreciate a good joke even if it's at my expense, but you know that they are going to go out of their why to slam, basically, me.

On the horizon, there's a show coming up with Robin Williams running for president. It's going to be the same thing.

And the networks wonder why people claim the the MSM leans left.

The new show on our must-see list this year has been Eureka, on the sci-fi channel. It's on Tuesday nights at 8:00, with repeats throughout the week. Check that one out when you get the chance. They've had about 6 or 7 episodes so far, so I don't know how many more will play.

I really appreciate the honesty and straightforwardness of your post. Did you watch tonight's episode? From my viewpoint (I'm Jewish) I can see how you would see the born-again cast member as a hypocrite. When she jokes about switching seats if Jesus were her co-pilot, she sounds false to me. What did you think?

Judd,

No, I didn't watch it. Not because I was miaking a stand or anything like that, but because I was off playing guitar with some friends. I do plan on catching it next week.

Dude:
Posts like this just reinforce the stereotype this show was making fun on in the first place. Way to prove them right.

The show didn't make fun of "evil right wing christians." It made fun of reactionaries, bigots and nutbars who think the world is coming to an end (it isn't).

The christian character first of all did not come off as a "born again." She came off as a reasonable person of faith. She is shown as smart, funny and open minded. There was even a line where she talked about appearing on the 700 club and stated that whiel she did not believe in the views of its host, she wanted to sing for his audience who are by and large good christian folk.

Sorkin obviously does write his political views into the show, but he really did go out of his way in Studio 60 to say "hey, just because I think this way doesn't mean other opinions aren't valid also".

Raging against christians? Hardly. Raging against close-minded nutjobs who would try to get a TV show pulled off the air rather than exercise their god-given right to change the channel? You betcha.

To your credit I will say thank you for being rational and just not watching a show that doesn't interest you rather than rallying around it and trying to get it taken off the air.

I disagree that the Christian cast member is going to be a flake or make Christians look bad. So far (first two episodes) she has been portrayed very positively as a woman, performer, and Christian. I have seen no tension caused by the character due to her religion. The point you make that she will be a major focus of tension is simply unfounded. Make any point you'd like and state your opinion but I really feel that you've misrepresented what they are doing with her, Harriet's, character. She has been nothing but intelligent, friendly, and professional. So please do not "spin" this show to make writing your blog easier.

The point of that comment is saying that if Jesus is your co-pilot you should switch seats and let Jesus be your pilot because he is obviously more qualified. That was not a joke or a put down or a stab. That a geniune comment on her beliefs.

Andrew:
Actually, both the second and first episodes criticized the way that people make fun of George Bush these days. In the pilot, Wes criticizes the jokes about George Bush's speech patterns, saying basically, "okay, we get it." And in the second episode Matt Albie rails on the writers after getting frustrated with all the stupid Bush jokes they're coming up with.

How is this criticizing Bush? It's criticizing comedy writers and pundits who can't criticize the man on the substantial issues.

Wow, I didn't think this post would drive this much interest.

I will watch the show again sometime and follow up.

I won't 'spin the show', but understand that I may see things diferently. I made it clear that I'm not knee jerk on this stuff.

You Christians are a scary lot. You've had power now for 8 years and what's happened?

1. A war in Iraq that should never had happened.
2. A congressmen accused of pedophelia.
3. Jack Abramoff bribing republicans.
4. An incredible increase of the national debt.

I applaud Sorkin for pointing out the hypocritical and evil religious right.
