Surly's Soap Box

Blah, Blah, Blah...
The plan to return to regular posting has hit a snag due to long working hours and general exhaustion. So I introduce my 4 1/2 year old. I think she has a future in blogging. Heck, she's already made more sense than most of the lefties out there:

Hmmmm, I don't know if I agree with your daughter on Ann Coulter. It seems to me that the media is going to lie and distort anyways. Why not work on being less mealy-mouthed and spineless?

I'm sure Hannah would be offended by anyones mean spiritedness. While I personally think that Edwards should be home with his cancer stricken wife instead of campaining, I thinks it's childish to accuse him of being gay (or whatever). Shouldn't we, as conservatives, strive to rise above such discourse?

Surly, I think that we get played by the media on this one. They react to what she says and give it their spin and we react to their version. Oftentimes what I've noticed is that she's making a broader point about their hypocrisy and then they go and prove it yet again. Whereas I'm less confrontational than Coulter is I'm not going to buy the distortion that they're selling.

Ben,
I know what you mean. The lefty media prowls like a hungry lion looking for those they can devour, and an outspoken conservative woman is a mighty tasty treat.

I have to admit that I'm a bit o' victim when it comes to the reporting: I haven't been following politics or the news lately, and I saw a little blurb about Coulter and jumped to conclusions. Woe is me! I'm so easly lead astray!

On another note, your a guitar player, right? We should get together and jam sometime.

Why yes, I am a guitar player (of a sort). As I recall you're not too far down the road from me. A jam session would be fun, especially if we could connect it to a Saturday afternoon barbecue! :)

The kid's got Ben beat on the Ann Coulter argument. Her's is one of the most provocative and original arguments I've seen on the blogosphere for some time, and I congratulate her for not being afraid of moderation. As she points out with such maturity, Al Franken, as scary as he is, provides us with a bogeyman with which to scare swing voters into considering the Right to be moderate and decent, and the presence of an Al Franken equivolent on the Right only provides an equally frightening bogeyman for the Left to use against us.

One could submit, of course, that extreme voices serve the purpose of moving mainstream conservatives to the middle in the perception of the country, but I would argue that the media controls public perception in such a manner that the likes of Ann Coulter will be percieved disproportionately more than those of Dennis Prager. It doesn't matter that she's a satirist as long as the perception is that she's simply a conservative commentator.
