Surly's Soap Box

Company Slogan
"Increasing productivity through unrealistic expectations!"

My wife is concerned that I may say something that could reflect poorly on my employers, but hey, I realized today that they are impervious to criticism, positive or other wise, and they wouldn't get it I did.

If I say that the reason jobs are being completed late is because they (the bosses) shut down production to paint the doors, they reply that it is poor time management on the painters part. He should work Saturdays as well.

Even if it would require breaking the laws of time and space, the fact that it is on the schedule means it must be done. Even if the back-lit directory is still in the crate sitting on a loading dock. In Chicago.

Even if you leave the shop at 11:00 in the morning, they expect you to do 8 hours of install. Sorry, but my day starts around 7:00 am. I'm not working 'til 7:00pm at night because everything was messed up at the shop. Of course it's an emergency.

I have sat in costumers offices and heard them swear that they would never use our company again because of the way they were treated by one of the bosses. It's to bad. I guess that before these folks bought the place, it was a great place to work. Now it's a battle ground of finger pointing and passing the buck. And of course, it's the employees fault. Even though the place was profitable and respected with many of the same employees that were there before they bought it.

Oh well. It's their toy. They own it, they can do what they want with it. Even if it means driving away all their costumers and employees and running the company into the ground.

Fortunately, I don't have to play.

You remind me of a question I have; the usual wisdom when leaving a company is "don't burn your bridges, you might need that job back." However, I've bumped into a lot of people who at least claim a totally disfunctional company culture. Maybe what these companies need is for someone to leave and tell them exactly why they left?
