9 Trillion in Debt?
You know, this really bothers me. 9 trillion. What's going on here? Why is the government so set on spending money like a drunken sailor? If I spent the way government did, someone would have forcibly taken away my credit cards and possibly locked me up.

Something is wrong here. Very wrong. There isn't a good defense for this.

Actually, if you count the unfunded liabilities and use the GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Practices) that the government requires every other corporation to use, the real national debt is in excess of fifty trillion dollars.

And what do you have against drunken sailors, comparing them to government? Yeesh. :^)

Maybe it's the massive expenditures for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy?

Actually, most of it is unfunded liabilities for Social Security and Medicare, along with the costs of the "Great Society"/"War on the poor," which dwarf DOD spending each year. It's not even close.

And to thin, 7 years ago it was a 5 trillion dollar SURPLUS. That's a turn-around of, what, 14 trillion? And the GOP has been in complete control of the pursestrings for all but 11 months of those 7 years. I'm glad the republicans are the fiscally "responsible" party...

***yawn***

Sure, their spending money on the war. The party of the wealthy (Democrats) would have spent as much on 'social programs' or cost us as much with their spread the wealth taxation and save the planet from global warming initiatives.

Quite honestly, I don't believe anyone who wants to be in power has the public good in their best interest.

The best place for my money is in my pocket, not in the government tills being spent by any elected official.

David, that's baloney. There were "form surpluses" back in the 1990s, but when proper accounting standards (GAAP) are used, our country hasn't run a surplus since the 1950s. Even the post optimistic (lying) estimates produced only calculated annual surpluses of around 100-200 billion dollars--nowhere near trillions.

Suggest you get some new sources for your information. Your current ones are a little weak on the facts.
